Background of the Study
Anesthesia-related complications, such as respiratory depression, aspiration, and postoperative nausea and vomiting, remain significant risks for surgical patients (Ali et al., 2024). Nurses involved in postoperative care must be equipped with the knowledge and skills to recognize, prevent, and manage these complications promptly. In Sokoto State, where healthcare facilities may face challenges in training and resources, it is critical to assess nurses' knowledge of anesthesia-related complications and their ability to manage these risks effectively in postoperative care.
Nurses are on the front lines of postoperative care, closely monitoring patients for signs of anesthesia complications. Their understanding of the effects of anesthesia, including how it interacts with patients’ conditions and surgical procedures, is crucial for preventing and managing these complications. This study will assess the level of knowledge nurses possess regarding anesthesia-related complications and evaluate their preparedness to address these complications in postoperative care in Sokoto State hospitals.
Statement of the Problem
Anesthesia-related complications can significantly impact postoperative recovery, but nurses’ knowledge and preparedness to manage these complications may be insufficient. In Sokoto State hospitals, where healthcare training and resources may be limited, there is a need to evaluate how well nurses understand and respond to anesthesia-related complications in postoperative care.
Objectives of the Study
To assess nurses' knowledge of anesthesia-related complications in postoperative care in Sokoto State hospitals.
To evaluate the preparedness of nurses in managing anesthesia-related complications during the postoperative period.
To identify gaps in nurses' knowledge and suggest strategies for improving education and training in anesthesia-related complications.
Research Questions
How knowledgeable are nurses in Sokoto State hospitals regarding anesthesia-related complications in postoperative care?
How prepared are nurses to manage anesthesia-related complications during the postoperative period?
What are the main challenges nurses face in addressing anesthesia-related complications in postoperative care?
Research Hypotheses
Nurses in Sokoto State hospitals possess limited knowledge of anesthesia-related complications and their management.
Nurses' preparedness to manage anesthesia-related complications is associated with their level of knowledge and training in postoperative care.
Gaps in nurses' knowledge and training on anesthesia-related complications contribute to inadequate management of these complications in postoperative care.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on postoperative nurses in Sokoto State hospitals and assess their knowledge and preparedness in managing anesthesia-related complications. The limitations include the difficulty in assessing the full range of anesthesia-related complications and the potential for reporting bias.
Definitions of Terms
Anesthesia-Related Complications: Adverse effects that occur as a result of anesthesia, including respiratory depression, nausea, vomiting, and aspiration.
Postoperative Care: The care provided to patients after surgery, focusing on recovery, pain management, and preventing complications such as anesthesia-related issues.
Nurses' Knowledge: The level of understanding and information that nurses possess regarding the management of anesthesia-related complications in postoperative care.
